Residents Compete to Name Territory’s First Locally-Born Giant Panda Cubs

HONG KONG — A resurgence of panda fever has swept across Hong Kong as residents eagerly compete to name the territory’s first locally-born giant panda cubs, who recently celebrated their six-month birthday. This contest, launched after a celebratory ceremony at Ocean Park, comes with the hope of further boosting the city’s tourism industry.

Competition Rules and Launch

The competition to name the twin cubs began on Saturday, the same day as their public unveiling ceremony, which was attended by Hong Kong’s leader, John Lee, and other officials. The initiative encourages residents to submit their name suggestions via Ocean Park’s official website.

Local Leader’s Remarks

During the ceremony, Lee highlighted that Hong Kong now houses the largest number of pandas in captivity outside of mainland China. He also mentioned that the names of the cubs would be revealed within the first half of 2025.

Pandas Attract Media and Public Attention

These twin cubs, born on August 15, 2024, have already garnered significant attention, particularly on social media platforms. Their rise to online stardom has sparked hope for a tourism revival termed the “panda economy” by some lawmakers. Businesses are being urged to capitalize on this phenomenon.

Differences in Cub Behavior

A media preview session revealed distinct play behaviors between the two cubs. The male cub showed a preference for swinging and playing with a tree stick while the female cub was more active, enjoying climbing and resting in the trees. Carers have noted that the female cub seems to be more energetic compared to her brother. To differentiate the cubs easily, the male has been marked with two purple spots on its back.

Mother Panda’s Significance

The birth of these panda cubs marks another milestone for their mother, Ying Ying, who became the world’s oldest first-time panda mom at the age of 31. This event not only adds to local pride but also emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts.

Ocean Park’s Public Engagement Efforts

The twin cubs, provisionally referred to as “Elder Sister” and “Little Brother,” will make their public debut on Sunday. They will be accessible to visitors for five hours daily throughout June. For those wishing to interact with the cubs before the regular opening hours of the park, a special opportunity is available for a fee of 1,500 Hong Kong dollars, approximately $190.
