The disappearance of Mohammad Bakri caused great emotion among fans of series and cinema. The actor, known for his notable roles on television and on the big screen, died in Israel. His rich and committed career has spanned more than four decades.
A career forged between theater, cinema and television
Born on November 27, 1953 in Bi’ina, in the Galilee, the future actor trained in theater at Tel Aviv University. Quickly, he established himself on Israeli stages, where he played a series of roles. His trajectory took a turning point in 1980 with his participation in the film Hanna K., directed by Costa-Gavras.
This first success opens the way to a dense filmography. In 1993, he played a central role in Season of Migration to the North, an adaptation of Tayeb Saleh’s novel directed by Ouriel Zohar. This performance earned him the best actor prize at the Saint-Jean-d’Acre Theater Festival.
Over the years, Mohammad Bakri multiplies his projects, alternating arthouse cinema with larger productions. He also established himself on television. In 2020, he played Abdul Qadir G’ulom in Homeland, before joining the French series Le Bureau des Légendes, where he lent his features to Ahmad Shahana. His last appearance in the cinema dates from this year, in What remains of us by Cherien Dabis, where he played the elderly Sharif.
A committed artist and a disappearance announced by the hospital
Alongside his acting work, Mohammad Bakri tries his hand at directing. In 2002, he directed Jenin, Jenin, a documentary dedicated to the Palestinian refugee camp of Jenin. The film aroused great controversy and was banned from screening in Israel for two years, before finally being authorized by the Supreme Court.
The announcement of his death was made by the spokesperson for the hospital where he was being treated. “Mohammad Bakri died this Wednesday at the Galilee Medical Center“, he declared. His family then clarified that the actor died from heart and lung problems.
On a personal level, the actor was the father of six children. Three of them chose to follow in his footsteps and embrace an artistic career: Saleh Bakri, Ziad Bakri and Adam Bakri. With his disappearance, the world of culture loses a recognized figure, whose journey has marked several generations of spectators.
