Hidden Water World Beneath Earth’s Crust: Staggering Discoveries Revealed
It feels like there have been staggering science stories emerging every other day recently, all of which have blown our tiny little minds. From the discovery of a terrifying black hole pointing right at us to a huge hole found in the sun and a missing continent found after going missing for 375 years, the science world is buzzing. Now, people are only just realizing that there’s a massive ocean hidden under the Earth’s crust.
A Massive Ocean Beneath the Earth’s Crust
A groundbreaking revelation from the scientific world indicates the existence of a vast water supply hidden 400 miles underground within a mineral known as ‘ringwoodite.’ This discovery was laid out in a 2014 scientific paper titled ‘Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle,’ which provided the initial findings.
The Role of Ringwoodite in Water Storage
It turns out there’s a huge supply of water 400 miles underground stored in rock known as ringwoodite. The mineral’s unique crystal structure allows it to act like a sponge, soaking up water. "The ringwoodite is like a sponge, soaking up water," said geophysicist Steve Jacobsen. He added, "This mineral can contain a lot of water under conditions of the deep mantle.”

Implications for the Earth’s Water Cycle
The discovery suggests the existence of a whole-Earth water cycle. Jacobsen noted: "I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades."
Scientists made the discovery by studying earthquakes and observing shockwaves under the surface of the Earth. They established that water is being held in the ringwoodite mineral. If the rock contained just 1 per cent water, it would mean there is three times more water under the surface of the Earth than there is in the oceans on the surface.
More Discoveries Await
This is not the only significant discovery made by scientists recently. Just last year, researchers found an entirely new ecosystem when turning over volcanic crust with the aid of an underwater robot. It proves that even now, nature has many more secrets to unearth.
