Reaffirming the US-Japan Alliance

during his visit to Tokyo, Secretary Hegseth emphasized the critical role Japan plays in deterring potential military aggression from China. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance the military capabilities of both nations, especially considering escalating tensions surrounding Taiwan and China’s increasingly assertive posture in the South and East China Seas.

Upgrading Military Command Structure

In a meaningful move to improve joint operational effectiveness, the United States is upgrading its military command structure in Japan to a new “Fight General Headquarters”. This restructuring aims to streamline coordination with the newly established Japan Joint Operations Command (JJOC), launched just last week. The JJOC is designed to integrate Japan’s ground, maritime, and air self-defense forces, enhancing their ability to respond to contingencies and collaborate seamlessly with US forces.

this upgrade will place a unified operational commander to work as a joint headquarters of Joint Force, coordinate with his Japanese counterpart and serve as a “figure General Fight” to reinforce the speed and capacity of the joint operations of his troops.

Addressing Concerns and Strengthening Capabilities

Hegseth’s visit served to reassure Japanese officials about the enduring US commitment to the region, particularly in light of past concerns regarding potential shifts in American foreign policy. To further solidify the alliance, both countries have agreed to accelerate the joint development and production of advanced missiles, including Air-to-Air missiles of advanced medium range (MRAAM) and are considering the production of surface-to-air missiles SM-6. This initiative aims to address potential ammunition shortages and bolster overall defense capabilities.

Furthermore, plans are underway to expedite the maintenance of US warships and combat aircraft in Japan, fostering closer ties between the Japanese and American defense industries.

Strategic Importance of the Southwest Islands

Recognizing the strategic meaning of Japan’s Southwest Islands, located near Taiwan and within the East china Sea, both Hegseth and Nakatani affirmed their commitment to strengthening Japan’s defense posture in this critical area. This move is intended to further enhance deterrence against China and safeguard vital sea lanes.

The need for a “sustained, robust, list and credible deterrence” in the Indo -pacific, which includes the Taiwan Strait, since “Japan would be in the first line of any contingency that we can face in the Western Pacific”.

Prior to his visit to Japan, Secretary Hegseth also visited the Philippines, where he reaffirmed the US commitment to strengthening ties with the Southeast Asian nation, which is also facing maritime disputes with China.
