Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg Handewitt won on Friday against newly promoted GWD Minden with 35:31 (22:16) and has jumped back to second place in the table, at least for the time being.
If defending champions Füchse Berlin do not win the top game at SC Magdeburg on Saturday, the Schleswig-Holsteiners will remain in runner-up place beyond the weekend.
Either way – with the win against Kellerkind Minden, Flensburg underlined its ambitions to qualify for the Champions League. The best thrower for the SG was Johannes Golla with nine goals. Thanks to its success in the table, Flensburg also moved away from its rival THW Kiel, who had previously lost at MT Melsungen.
“If we play disciplined up front and let the ball run, it looks very good that we can create a lot of free chances. You could see that we worked a lot on defense during the week,” said SG backcourt player Marko Grgic in an interview with NDR.

Before the international break, Flensburg suffered two defeats within five days at THW Kiel. Against the guests from Minden, who were in great danger of relegation, the main thing was to gain new self-confidence for the final spurt of the season.
Which was successful after a few initial difficulties. From the seventh minute onwards, the Schleswig-Holsteiners steadily pulled away and lived up to their role as favorites. Above all, Golla and Marko Grgic, who missed the last duel with Kiel due to illness, were extremely keen to play.
Excitement about Pytlick
Niclas Kirkelökke, who was out for a short time with an infection, and Simon Pytlick, who was rested due to abdominal muscle problems, were not used.
There has been unrest around Pytlick in the past few days. The Dane, who has signed with Füchse Berlin from 2027, would like to move to the capital this summer. The transfer fee is now being haggled behind the scenes.
Saving energy in the second half
But even without their two Danish stars, the SG had little chance against Minden. Since the game seemed already decided in the first half, Aleš Pajovič’s team slowed down a few gears early on and was able to save energy for the next tasks.
Flensburg continues on the international stage on Tuesday. Then the first leg of the play-offs in the European League will take place at Denmark club Skanderborg-Aarhus (6.45 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter).
