Renewed Hostilities in Gaza
The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has collapsed, leading to a resurgence of violence in the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces have resumed air strikes, resulting in casualties and further devastation in the region. The renewed fighting has plunged the 2.3 million residents of Gaza back into a state of crisis, undoing the brief respite offered by the two-month truce that began in January.
Targeted strikes and Casualties
According to reports, Israeli air strikes on Thursday, March 27, 2025, targeted a tent in Jabalia, resulting in the death of Abdel-Latif Al-Qanouua, a Hamas spokesman. The attack also caused injuries to several others. Separate strikes in gaza City and Khan Younis in South Gaza reportedly killed seven people. These actions are part of a broader Israeli military campaign in the region. [[1]]
Hamas Leadership Targeted
In addition to Al-Qanouua, Israeli forces have reportedly killed other key Hamas figures this week. Ismail Barhoum, a member of the Hamas Political Office, and Al-Bardaweel, a senior leader, were also killed in targeted operations. These individuals were reportedly part of the Hamas Decision Making Agency, which consists of 20 members. Eleven of these members have reportedly been killed since the beginning of the war in late 2023.
Ceasefire collapse and Accusations
The two-month ceasefire, which had been in effect since January, offered a temporary reprieve for the war-weary residents of Gaza. Though, last week, Israel ended the ceasefire, resuming bombing and land operations. Since March 18, 2025, reports indicate that Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of 830 people, with more than half of them being women and children. Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.[[2]]
Every round of fighting has seen people killed on both sides, the vast majority of them Palestinians in Gaza.
