After a distinguished career spanning over two decades, milan Gulaš, the 39-year-old captain of Motor České Budějovice, has announced his retirement from professional hockey [[1]]. The proclamation came promptly following his team’s quarterfinal exit from the Czech Extraliga playoffs at the hands of Pardubice.

Gulaš, a native of České Budějovice, expressed a desire to step away from the spotlight and enjoy a more secluded life after years of intense competition. He stated that he wouldn’t be persuaded to extend his career, despite calls from fans for one more season.

For me it ended today, I played the last match… I want to go into secluded peace, so I kept it under the lid. I was never happy in the spotlight.

The Weight of Leadership: Psychological Toll and Future Plans

Gulaš revealed that his decision to retire had been brewing for some time,having informed the club’s management back in November to allow them ample preparation. A notable factor in his decision was the psychological burden of leadership and the constant pressure to perform.

he explained that being a captain involves more than just playing hockey; it entails responsibilities to the team and the passionate fanbase. The weight of potential failure and its impact on his personal life ultimately contributed to his decision.

While he won’t be pursuing a coaching career, Gulaš expressed his willingness to mentor younger players, offering his experience and guidance whenever needed. He now looks forward to relaxation and pursuing other interests outside of hockey, notably cycling, which he describes as a “huge relaxation.”

A Look Back: Gulaš’s Illustrious Career

Milan Gulaš’s career is marked by significant achievements across various leagues.Before his final stint with České Budějovice,where he played for four seasons,Gulaš showcased his talent in Kladno and Pilsen. He also ventured overseas, playing in the Junior USHL, the KHL with Magnitogorsk, and for three and a half seasons in the Swedish hockey League (SHL) with Färjestad [[3]].

His final season saw him participate in 47 games, amassing an extraordinary 41 points, including 14 goals and 27 assists. He further contributed 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) in 8 playoff games. In his final game, he even managed to score, assisted by Jan Ordoš.

Throughout his career, Gulaš participated in 828 games, accumulating 691 points (317 goals, 374 assists) [[2]]. He also represented the Czech Republic in 57 national team matches, scoring 8 goals and providing 15 assists for a total of 23 points. He played at the 2019 World Championship.

Between 2018 and 2020, Gulaš was honored as the Czech Extraliga’s hockey player of the season three times consecutively, consistently topping the league‘s scoring charts. while team championships eluded him, he secured a silver medal with Färjestad in 2014 and two bronze medals with both Pilsen and České Budějovice. He also finished fourth with the national team at the World Championship.
