At least 15 people died and 19 others were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine on a highway in western Guatemala, fire department spokesman Leandro Amado said Saturday.
Amado said that the incident occurred at kilometer 174 of the Inter-American route, with a death toll of 11 men, three women and a minor.
The 19 injured were evacuated to a hospital in the area.
The accident site is known as “the summit of Alaska” in the Sololá region, which is characterized by being a mountainous area, with curves and dense fog that makes it difficult for transporters to see when driving.
Images shared on social media by the fire department early this Saturday showed the bus destroyed at the bottom of the ravine, while first responders worked to rescue the victims.
