Cleveland Guardians Ink Jakob Junis to One-Year Deal
The Cleveland Guardians have secured the services of Jakob Junis with a one-year, $4.5MM agreement, as reported by Kiley McDaniel of ESPN. The 32-year-old right-handed pitcher complements Stephen Vogt’s pitching staff, offering both rotation and bullpen experience. Before finalizing the deal, Cleveland needs to clear a spot on their 40-man roster by designating Shane Bieber, David Fry, or Sam Hentges for the 60-day injured list.
Jakob Junis: A Versatile Pitcher
Junis has navigated various roles throughout his career, transitioning between the rotation and bullpen. Over the past two seasons, he has predominantly served in multi-inning relief, where he has demonstrated his efficiency, posting a 3.87 earned run average and a career-high 26.2% strikeout rate across 80 innings for the San Francisco Giants. His strong performances earned him a $7MM guarantee from the Milwaukee Brewers the prior offseason.
Injury History
Despite early-season optimism, Junis encountered significant setbacks. After a shoulder impingement in his first appearance, he suffered a startling incident where a fly ball struck him in the neck during batting practice, necessitating a brief hospitalization. These delays hampered his return, prompting the Brewers to shift him to the bullpen and ultimately package him along with Joey Wiemer to the Reds in exchange for Frankie Montas.
Recent Performance
With the Reds, Junis initially remained in the bullpen before transitioning to a starting role in the season’s final month. Although the Reds were out of contention, Junis exhibited strong command, limiting opponents to two runs or fewer in six consecutive appearances, indicating his readiness for a rotation role.
Though injuries limited his innings to 67 last season, Junis managed a career-low 2.69 ERA, showcasing his consistency. However, his strikeout rate dipped to 20.2%, aligning more closely with his career average. His primary pitches—a sinker, four-seam fastball, and slider—remain effective, especially against left-handed batters, as evidenced by his ability to hold left-handers to a .218/.238/.406 slash line.
Guardians Rotation Prospects
The Guardians’ rotation remains a focal point; Tanner Bibee, their current ace, faces the uncertainty of Shane Bieber’s Tommy John surgery recovery. Following Bibee, the Guardians may lean on a mix of Ben Lively, Gavin Williams, and Luis Ortiz. Junis competes with Triston McKenzie, Joey Cantillo, Slade Cecconi, and Logan Allen for the fifth starter role.
McKenzie’s lack of options suggests he will occupy a spot on the active roster. Allen, Cantillo, and Cecconi have options remaining, allowing for their potential demotion to Triple-A Columbus if they miss out on Opening Day.
Financial Implications
With this signing, Cleveland’s projected payroll climbs to around $100MM, aligning with their $98MM season-opening payroll from last year but slightly below their end-of-2024 payroll. Should the Guardians secure the division and ALCS berth as expected, they could allocate the remaining funds for additional depth acquisitions.
The addition of Junis enhances the Guardians’ pitching depth, addressing a critical area as the season approaches. His proven track record and the potential to fill multiple roles make him a valuable asset to the team.
