A grassroots movement seeks to redefine Flemish liberalism, adding pressure on Open VLD’s chairwoman.
A Call for Liberal renewal
A groundswell of activity is stirring within Flemish liberal circles. A WhatsApp group, comprising approximately 150 members identifying as liberals,is actively promoting participation in a ‘Staten-General of Flemish Liberalism,’ scheduled for May 13th. This initiative arrives at a crucial juncture, intensifying the scrutiny on Eva De Bleeker, the chairwoman of Open VLD, the Flemish liberal party.
States General: A Platform for Discussion, not Dissension?
The impetus behind the states General stems from the Liberal Vlaams Verbond (LVV). However,Maarten de Bousser, chairman of the LVV,emphasizes that the assembly is not intended as a direct challenge to Eva De Bleeker’s leadership. We just try to determine where we are, as liberals, where we want to go and how a political liberal party should deal with it,
de Bousser stated, framing the event as a strategic assessment of the liberal movement’s current standing and future direction.
Key Figures Involved
The WhatsApp group coordinating the States General includes notable figures within the Flemish liberal landscape.Among the participants are Lawrence Vanhove, chairman of Liberales; sepp Tyvaert, youth chairman; Vincent Stuer, a board member and author; and Frédéric De Gucht, a prominent Brussels leader. Their involvement underscores the breadth of support for this initiative across different segments of the liberal community.
Objectives and expected Outcomes
Organizers envision the May 13th meeting culminating in a comprehensive conference text. This document will articulate clear substantive requirements, organizational proposals and choices that say where we want to go with the liberal party – and what we no longer swallow,
according to organizers. The aim is to define a clear path forward for the liberal party, addressing both its ideological underpinnings and its organizational structure.
De Bleeker’s Response: Openness to Dialogue
Eva De Bleeker has acknowledged her past affiliation with the LVV and affirmed her positive relationship with the association. notably, she has not ruled out participating in the States General. I think it’s good that all liberal organizations think about the future of liberalism,
de Bleeker commented, signaling a willingness to engage in dialogue and collaboration with various liberal factions.
Open VLD’s Broader Strategy
De Bleeker is planning a large congress from September 12th to 14th, aiming to establish a foundation for a revitalized liberal party. This event suggests a parallel effort to shape the future of Flemish liberalism, potentially setting the stage for fascinating dynamics between the grassroots movement and the established party leadership.
