Gregoria Ranking Protected: BWF Decision Explained

BWF approved Gregoria Mariska Tunjung‘s request to protect her ranking for one year. The submission was made in connection with the medical condition of vertigo, the 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist.

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) submitted protected ranking for a minimum validity period of three (3) months to one (1) year starting from December 30, 2025.

Gregoria’s vertigo condition requires ongoing medical treatment, as well as a measured recovery period so that Gregoria cannot participate in the series of international tournaments on the BWF competition calendar.

Based on the evaluation results and supporting documents submitted, BWF gave approval to the application.

This policy aims to protect athletes’ ranking positions due to absence from competitions caused by medical conditions or other reasons in accordance with BWF regulations.

Head of the PBSI Binpres, Eng Hian, emphasized that the athlete’s health condition is the main priority in every decision making.

During the recovery period, Gregoria will receive comprehensive assistance and supervision from the PBSI support team, covering medical, physical, technical and psychological aspects, so that the recovery process can run optimally and sustainably.

“We respect and appreciate BWF’s decision to approve the application protected ranking for Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. “This decision provides space for athletes to focus on recovering without having to be burdened by the consequences for world rankings,” said Eng Hian in his written statement, Tuesday (30/12/2025).

“PBSI is committed to continuing to provide full support so that Gregoria can compete again in the best condition,” he said.
