Heightened Alert: Gimpo’s Proactive Defense Against Livestock Diseases
Gimpo City is on high alert, bolstering its defenses against the incursion of devastating livestock diseases. This proactive stance comes as South Korea grapples with a surge in outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), African Swine Fever (ASF), and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
Regional Outbreaks Trigger Emergency Response
The urgency of the situation is underscored by recent events. This year alone, Yangju City, sharing geographical proximity with Gimpo, has reported three cases of ASF.Furthermore, the jeollanam-do province has been battling a series of 13 consecutive FMD outbreaks.Adding to the concern, HPAI has been detected in Sejong and Cheonan, creating a ring of infectious disease pressure around Gimpo.
The economic impact of these diseases can be substantial. Such as, the 2010-2011 FMD outbreak in South Korea resulted in the culling of over 3 million animals and cost the nation an estimated ₩3 trillion (approximately $2.5 billion USD).
Extensive Biosecurity Strategy Unveiled
Gimpo city is deploying a multi-faceted strategy to mitigate the risk. Key initiatives include:
- Mass Vaccination: A city-wide vaccination campaign targeting cattle and goats is underway, utilizing specialized “airborne doctor” teams to ensure comprehensive coverage by March 31st.
- Enhanced disinfection: Seven dedicated disinfection vehicles are strategically positioned to sanitize livestock farm entrances, creating a robust barrier against pathogen entry.
- regulatory Enforcement: strict administrative orders are in effect, mandating adherence to quarantine protocols, particularly regarding access control to poultry farms, to prevent HPAI transmission.
- Resource Allocation: The city has distributed 2,450 kg of emergency disinfectants and 18 tons of quicklime to livestock farmers, empowering them to maintain rigorous on-farm biosecurity.
- Active Surveillance: Dedicated personnel are conducting proactive telephone surveillance, monitoring compliance with quarantine regulations and identifying any suspicious symptoms in livestock populations.
