poultry Industry Under Scrutiny: four Paws Highlights sustainability and Health Concerns

The Environmental and Health costs of Chicken Consumption
As concerns about sustainable eating grow, the global animal welfare organization Four Paws is drawing attention to the environmental and health impacts of the poultry industry. Despite a general decline in meat consumption in Germany, poultry consumption is on the rise, raising questions about its sustainability and health benefits.
Four Paws calculates an annual “Meat Exhaustion Day” to highlight when a country’s meat consumption exceeds the recommendations of the planetary Health Diet (PhD), a scientifically-backed dietary guideline developed by the EAT-Lancet Commission. This diet emphasizes a balance between human health and environmental sustainability.
Currently, the average German consumes approximately one kilogram of meat per week, exceeding the global average by 1.4 times and the PhD proposal by over three times. This level of consumption raises significant concerns about the long-term sustainability of current dietary habits.
The Rising Tide of poultry Consumption: A Closer Look
While overall meat consumption may be decreasing, the poultry industry is experiencing growth. this increase prompts Four Paws to question the industry’s claims of health, sustainability, and high animal welfare standards.
According to Four Paws, the sheer number of poultry slaughtered annually in Germany is staggering, with 693.3 million birds processed each year. This translates to approximately 1,199 chickens slaughtered every minute.
These are amazing numbers. The poultry industry tries to make the consumers: to let poultry are healthy, sustainable and produced according to the highest animal welfare standards. We cannot leave that.Vanessa Schilke, campaigner at Four paws
The organization argues that the conditions in which these birds are raised often fall far short of acceptable welfare standards. A vast majority (99%) of chickens are housed in crowded sheds with tens of thousands of other birds, leading to health problems and limited mobility. Only a tiny fraction (1.4%) have access to outdoor runs.
Factory Farming Practices: Risks to Animal and Human Health
The intensive nature of poultry farming also raises concerns about the overuse of antibiotics. To prevent disease outbreaks in crowded conditions, chickens are often fed reserve antibiotics. A 2024 study by the Albert Schweitzer Foundation found antibiotic-resistant germs in half of the poultry samples tested from various supermarkets. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers antibiotic resistance one of the greatest threats to human health.
Moreover, the study detected fecal germs, salmonella, listeria, and campylobacter in the poultry samples, all of which can cause gastrointestinal illnesses in humans.
Challenging the “Healthy” Image of Poultry
Four Paws is actively challenging the perception of poultry as a healthier option to red meat.Vanessa Schilke explains:
We are against any form of animal suffering and want to improve the situation of all animals. However,if the poultry industry is praising its product as a healthier meat alternative,we have to point out.Vanessa Schilke, campaigner at Four Paws
Studies suggest that poultry consumption can lead to similar cholesterol levels as red meat and considerably increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. plant-based protein sources like lentils, tofu, and nuts offer healthier alternatives, providing sufficient protein and high-quality nutrients.
Even when considering the carbon footprint, plant-based proteins often fare better than chicken, despite potential import considerations. Chicken production has a CO2 footprint of approximately 5.5 kg CO2 per kg of meat. The feed for chickens is frequently enough imported from South America, contributing to water shortages in agricultural regions due to the high water consumption of approximately 4,000 liters per kg of meat.
Project 1199: Shining a Light on the Poultry Industry
To shed light on the conditions within the poultry industry, Four Paws has launched Project 1199. This initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for improved animal welfare standards in poultry farming.
