WHO intends to stay in Gaza, despite Israeli evacuation orders
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that it would stay in the city of Gaza, despite the calls of Israel so that the inhabitants evacuate the main urban center of the Palestinian territory.
“In the civilians of Gaza: WHO and its partners remain in the city of Gaza”announced the organization on network X. The United Nations (UN) estimates that around a million people live in the city of Gaza and its surroundings.
WHO said it was on Wednesday “Dismayed” by the Israeli evacuation order, indicating that the “So-called“ humanitarian zone ”designated by Israel in the South (…) does not have the size or the scope of the services necessary to support people already present, and even less the newcomers ”.
Almost half of the hospitals that still work can be found in the city of Gaza, according to WHO, which stresses that the health system “Cannot afford to lose any of these remaining establishments”.
“Although the latest evacuation orders do not yet include hospitals, past incidents show how ineffective they become when battles block access to patients, prevent ambulances from accessing it and interrupt the replenishment of WHO and its partners”continues the organization.
