Ukraine, trade, sanctions: Talking topics for the EU and the United States at the G7 summit. But although some EU head of state have established personal relationships with US President Trump, expectations remain low.

Eight years ago, european heads of state and goverment experienced US President Donald trump at a G7 summit for the first time in Sicilian Taormina. Some were visibly impressed.

Chancellor Angela Merkel then said when he was performed in a beer tent near Munich that the times were over when Europe could rely on others. Instead, according to Merkel, Europeans would have to take their fate in their own hands.

This finding of 2017 has long as prevailed in the European Union – at the latest since Trump has moved into the White House for the second time and the most critically important trading partner and former security guarantee USA is increasingly turning away from Europe.

While the European Union continues to commit to unreserved support from Ukraine, US President Russia dose not even clearly name as an aggressor. Still, the EU relies to increase the pressure on Moscow at the G7 summit at the beginning of next week. As part of the 18th sanction package, brussels wants to reduce the price limit for Russian crude oil – from 60 to $ 45 per barrel. However, the declared goal of EU Commission President ursula von der Leyen is to do this together in the G7 framework.
