Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this Saturday that the G7 summit, commencing on june 15 in Canada, will prioritize strengthening peace, ensuring energy security, accelerating the digital transition, and fostering collaboration with the private sector to invest in infrastructure and economic progress.

In a released statement,Carney noted that the meeting will include leaders from the G7 nations (Germany,Canada,USA,France,Italy,Japan,and the United Kingdom),as well as invited leaders from Ukraine,India,Brazil,and Mexico. Discussions will focus on resolving several armed conflicts, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“Issues such as just and lasting peace for Ukraine and other regions in conflict will also be addressed,as well as a future -oriented agenda that includes partners beyond G7,recognizing that our long -term security and prosperity will depend on the construction of coalitions with reliable allies and common values,” the statement elaborated.

Key Challenges at the G7 Summit

Carney emphasized that the G7 summit provides an prospect to address pressing global challenges.

The 51st G7 Summit will be held in Kananaskis, a small resort town nestled in the Rocky Mountains of western Canada. The location previously hosted a similar meeting in 2002, then known as the G8 due to Russia’s inclusion.

The summit, scheduled to last until June 17, will mark the first time that US president Donald Trump meets with key allies as the commencement of his second presidential term in January.

Donald Trump’s prior participation in a G7 summit hosted by Canada in Charlevoix in 2018 was marked by the US president’s criticism of then-prime Minister justin trudeau and the withdrawal of the United States’ endorsement of the group’s final statement.

Canada Enhances Security Measures

Canadian authorities have implemented heightened security measures in kananaskis, with ground and air patrols conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Armed Forces to secure a wide perimeter around the town.

Access to Kananaskis forests will be restricted to hikers and campers starting Tuesday, June 10. Furthermore,large concrete barriers will be positioned on the access road to the town in the coming days.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have established a 55-kilometer no-fly zone around Kananaskis, prohibiting aircraft and drone activity. A separate 37-kilometer restricted zone is in effect around the Calgary airport.

Summit organizers have designated three specific areas in Calgary, located 60 kilometers from Kananaskis, for planned protests against the meeting.
