Future Cars: No More Screens?

A technology designed to fade away

These projectors directly display driving information (speed, navigation, safety alerts) on the dashboard itselfwhatever its material: wood, fabric or plastic. The display extends across the entire width of the cabin, then disappears completely when it is no longer needed. Objective stated: put an end to the accumulation of black screensoften criticized for their cold, invasive… and sometimes distracting side.

Unlike traditional screens, permanently backlit, this solution works by projection. It consumes little energy, activates especially at nightfall and does not require a specific surface area. Aumovio engineers also rely on software capable of assembling several projections into a perfectly homogeneous image. The idea appeals to designers: when the display is cut off, digital disappears completelyleaving room for materials and the interior atmosphere.

These projected surfaces can display much more than driving data: decorative patterns, ambient lighting, visual indications or driving assistance alerts. But one question remains central: how to avoid distraction while driving? Manufacturers will have to demonstrate that aesthetics never take precedence over safety.

Towards the end of the reign of screens?

Aumovio is not alone in wanting to rethink the interior. BMW recently introduced Panoramic Vision, a head-up display that spans the entire width of the windshield, just below the driver’s field of vision. Here, the objective is clear: never take your eyes off the roadwhile maintaining legible access to essential information.

The prototypes presented at CES still include, for the most part, additional physical screens. But the message is clear: the industry seeks to turn the page on “all-screen”. The car of the future could well be paradoxical: less tactile, more visually discreet… but more technological than ever. A change in philosophy which, if it convinces drivers, could profoundly transform our daily journeys.
