A fire broke out this Saturday morning at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. The flames, which may have originated from a short circuit in the electrical panel, forced the hospital unit to remove several patients from the building, as witnessed by the Observer at the scene.

Among the patients removed from the hospital are several elderly people in wheelchairs and babies.

The hospital activated the emergency plan and, at this moment, the operating room, the delivery room and the emergency service are closed.

According to CNN, next to the hospital ambulances are ready to transport patients removed from critical areas of what is the largest hospital in the Azores archipelago. People who were in the patient admission area were also advised to leave.
