The 30 -year -old Finnish deputy for opposition social democracy Eemeli Peltonen died on Tuesday in the Finnish Parliament building. According to AFP, the police said it was not suspected of committing a crime at the moment. Finnish media write about suicide.
“A person who died in the Parliament building on the morning of August 19 is Emeli Peltonen, a deputy in his first term of office,” the Parliament’s press department confirmed without specifying the cause of death. According to the police, Peltonen died around 11:00 (10:00 CEST). The police said it was investigating the cause of death, but “it does not suspect a crime at this stage”.
“The death of Eemeli Peltonen and all deeply grieved us,” said Tytti Tuppurainen in a statement in her statement. “He was a very appreciated member of our community and we will be very missing,” she added.
Many Finnish politicians, including the head of state, expressed their sorrow and condolence. “He was known as a competent and hardworking deputy whose work was respected across parties,” said President Alexander Stubb on network X.
The Finnish flag in front of the Parliament building in the center of Helsinki was launched on Tuesday to a sign of sadness.
At the end of June, Peltonen announced that he was on sickness for infection he had infected in the spring of kidney disease.
Finnish deputies currently have a parliamentary holiday. The next meeting of the unicameral parliament begins 2 September.
