Bank Reporting Requirements: Large Account Payments

by Archynetys Economy Desk

Banks constantly monitor activity on our account. The attempt to pay more from the ATM will certainly be recorded. Similar procedures, however, take place if we want to pay a lot of money to your account. In some cases, the bank is obliged to inform the tax authorities.

The currently binding provisions regarding monitoring of bank transfers were introduced in 2022 and aim to, among others Prevention of money laundering. However, the provisions apply not only to transfers, but the activity performed on accounts on the intermediary of ATMs and cash deposit machines.

How much can you pay to your account so as not to be observed by the tax office

The limit for which the transfer or payment to the cash deposit machine can be considered suspicious, it equivalent to 15,000 euro (PLN 63 655.50 according to the NBP exchange rate from 19.08.25 at 10:51). Transactions exceeding this limit should be automatically reported to the General Inspector of Financial Information (GIIF) by banks, where the decision will be made to make the case to the tax office possible.

However, it should be remembered that the appearance of a transfer in the tax office’s register does not mean the automatic need to pay tax from him. This may happen in the case of e.g. a donation, but here also special rules, depending on who the donation comes from.

Not only high amounts, banks constantly monitor accounts. When the bank still notifies the tax office

There may also be such cases when the bank reports our account to GIIF, despite the lack of transactions at a higher amount than the equivalent of 15 thousand. euro. This happens in several special cases, the most common of them include:

  • increased activity on the account, not matching previous events
  • A large number of transfers for small amounts
  • Suspicious entries in the “title” and “recipient” columns
  • A large number of frequent payments and cash payments at ATMs and cash deposit machines
