The conversation between Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Carlos Mazón during the day of the tragic Dana will be revealed in its entirety shortly. The leader of the PP has confirmed, in an interview given to the Servimedia agency published this Thursday, that he will send another notarial act to Judge Nuria Ruiz Tobarra of Catarroja with the messages that he wrote to the then president of the Valencian Community. It will do so after having already sent the whatsapp that Mazón sent him and after the instructor investigating the management of the cold drop that left 230 dead in Valencia asked him for “the possibility of voluntarily contributing” the communications in their entirety. Although Feijóo finds the judge’s request “surprising.”
In his first statements in the new year, Feijóo also predicts that “the judicial agenda” of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, “will be even tougher” in the next 12 months. Which could lead, in his opinion, to the early calling of general elections. “It is very possible that Sánchez will not be able to hold out in 2026 and we will open a new era with elections,” he points out. For his part, the head of the opposition insists on offering the groups an instrumental motion of censure with the “sole objective” of calling elections immediately afterwards. The PP leader even boasts of “fluid and respectful contact” with Junts at the parliamentary level. But he refuses to make concessions to Carles Puigdemont’s formation. “I don’t owe them anything.” In Congress, popular and post-convergent have voted hand in hand on several occasions in recent months.
The interview, broadcast this Thursday to inaugurate the year, took place on Monday afternoon. That is, just a few hours after the order was known in which the judge accepted that Feijóo testify as a witness by videoconference on the 9th. And that the instructor requested in that same document the leader of the PP to forward the messages that he sent to Mazón in the conversation held by telephone message between 8:08 p.m. and 11:29 p.m. on the day of the dana, in addition to those of the former president.
“If the judge wants to know the messages, in order to know what was happening in Valencia that night, have no doubt that, in the same way that I have collaborated, I will continue to do so,” says Feijóo. “As soon as I have a notary on duty, I will summon him again, I will show him my cell phone again, he will transcribe the messages and I will send them to the judge,” adds the PP leader. In mid-December, the instructor accepted the request made by the Association of Fatal Victims Dana 29-O, which is prosecuting the private prosecution, to call Feijóo as a witness and justified her decision in that she could “give reason for the comments” that Mazón could have “made” on October 29 “as a result of the conversations” with the then Minister of Justice and Interior, Salomé Pradas, investigated in these preliminary proceedings, “about the information that was receiving.”
After this movement, the popular leader sent the list of messages that Mazón wrote to the Court of Catarroja last Christmas Eve, accompanied by a document with context, but not those written by himself in the conversation, alleging that the instructor had not asked for them. “This is going to be a fucking disaster,” Mazón wrote to him, among other things, on the fateful day when he had already left the El Ventorro restaurant after eating for about four hours with the journalist Maribel Vilaplana.
But, in the order known this Monday the 29th, the judge offers Feijóo “the possibility of voluntarily contributing to the case within a period of three days the WhatsApp messages that form an integral part” of the conversation that day with Mazón. If the leader of the PP complies with that period of time, the communications are about to be submitted to the Court of Catarroja. Of course, Feijóo also shows his disagreement with this request. “It is surprising that an opposition leader, 450 kilometers from a tragedy like this, can have any relevance from the point of view of his decisions or actions, right? In short, there are many people in the Government from whom they have not asked anything… but that is a judicial decision,” he declares. And he points out that he does not want to join “the theory of lawfare” promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez.
The person who has made his attacks on the Catarroja instructor explicit has been the PP deputy in Congress, Rafael Hernando. “What Judge Tobarra is doing is unusual. She continues against Núñez Feijóo, who has no jurisdiction over prevention or help to those affected at the time of the damage, but does not ask anything from either the President of the Government or the ministers responsible for preventing and helping. Delirious,” the popular parliamentarian wrote on Tuesday on the social network X.

Hold on in 2026
In Feijóo’s diagnosis of the new year, the leader of the PP considers that “it is very possible that Sánchez will not be able to hold on in 2026” and that “a new era with elections” will begin. The general elections are not scheduled in principle until 2027, but the Government starts the year with serious difficulties in uniting parliamentary majorities in order to approve legislative projects. In fact, the president has asked the ministers for social measures that do not depend on Congress to regain momentum. The elections that If they are already around the corner, they are those of Aragón, dated February 8. And in which the popular ones want to deal another blow like the one in Extremadura to the PSOE, although the distribution of seats also makes a similar result difficult, on March 14, and those of Andalusia, around June.
Feijóo confirms a “fluid and respectful” contact with Junts that in recent months has been reflected in Congress where both parties have voted the same on several occasions, causing harsh setbacks for the Executive with the addition of Vox in the chamber. A lot has happened, or not so much, since at the beginning of 2024 the Popular Party registered in the Lower House a law that proposed the dissolution of parties that promote declarations of independence or an illegal referendum. Like Junts, with whom he now claims to understand.
