The company cites Network 2.0 initiative as the reason for the job cuts.
FedEx is set to lay off 84 workers at its facility located at 700 S.W. Ninth St. in downtown DES MOINES. Company officials have attributed the layoffs to the implementation of FedEx’s Network 2.0 initiative, a multi-year strategy aimed at simplifying service and enhancing efficiency through a “one van, one neighborhood” model.
“As part of this strategy, fedex is reorganizing the operations at this facility in Des Moines,” stated David Westrick, FedEx media relations spokesperson, in an email. “These decisions are never made lightly. We’re committed to supporting impacted employees through job placement assistance, relocation aid, or severance. Many will be offered other roles within the company.”
The affected employees were reportedly notified several months prior to the announcement and received written notice. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect in September. Despite these changes, FedEx maintains a significant presence in the Des Moines area, with seven other facilities employing over 600 individuals.
According to fedex, the Network 2.0 initiative is designed to overhaul the pickup, transport, and delivery processes for packages across the U.S. and Canada. The key components of this initiative include:
- Streamlining package pickups and deliveries with “one van, one neighborhood” coverage in many areas.
- Improving package speed and service by consolidating stations, decreasing handoffs and optimizing networks.
- Enhancing package visibility by using the same technology throughout the company.
- Providing consistent, simplified interactions with team members and tools.
The optimized network is intended to eliminate the need for customers to separate packages for pickup and ensure a unified delivery experiance.Data-driven decisions and geographic efficiencies are driving the consolidation of certain facilities in key districts. The company is also rolling out common technology systems, handheld software, and scanning processes across the network to improve package visibility and overall service.
As part of this consolidation effort, FedEx is closing some facilities and reorganizing staffing in others to streamline operations. The company says it is providing interaction, job resources, reassignment opportunities, and compensation packages to the affected employees.
To date, FedEx has implemented the Network 2.0 system in over 300 stations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Approximately 2.5 million packages are processed daily through these optimized stations.
