FCA Scam Emails: Avoid Fraud & Protect Your Money

Fraudsters are sending emails to citizens and businesses on behalf of the Financial Supervisory Commission. A report of this has been received in the Commission’s office.

The specific message informs about an increased risk for an international currency transfer of BGN 37,442.70 and the need to deposit an additional BGN 1,466.87 in order to complete the procedure for receiving the funds.

Fraudulent e-mails on behalf of the FSC contain an attached file in .doc formatwith a preview of electronic correspondence sent by e-mail financialsupervisioncommission@fscbg.org and a .jpeg file containing text with a title “Applying an increased risk procedure to an inbound international transfer”.

The Financial Supervision Commission alerts all recipients of such emails that the likely purpose is fraud and misappropriation of funds.

The FSC has no authority in relation to payment services, including incoming international transfers in Bulgaria. The fees collected by the Commission are related only to the general financial supervision of the persons supervised by the Commission and for the provision of services.

The e-mail addresses of the FSC are publicly available and published at the page.

In this regard, the Commission has already notified all institutions involved in the fight against fraud.

Phishing emails contain one or more of the following characteristics:

– In the e-mail it is described that data such as passwords, social security number, PIN code, CVC/CCV code or other sensitive information must be provided;

– The sender’s email and the email indicated in the sender’s signature are different or the signature with contacts is completely missing;

– The attached file has a strange title;

– The email subject creates a sense of urgency and pressure for immediate action;

– Spelling, punctuation and grammar errors are common in the email text. In addition, there is mixing of languages (e.g. English) and incorrectly used symbols, such as “»Plus d information” or “>/Body”.

What should you do if you receive such an email/call?

If you have received such an email, please delete it immediately without opening the attachment or opening the links in it. If you are a victim of such fraud, report it immediately to the responsible authorities, including the FSC.
