Facebook Gold Fraud: Vietnam Arrests Suspect in $15K Scam

Police in Huong Tra District arrested Nguyen Ngoc Hau.

At 11:30 a.m. on March 12, the Huong Tra District Police received a complaint from Ms. Vo Thi S. (born 1970, resident of Quang Tri District, Quang Tri Province). She alleged that she was defrauded in a transaction to purchase two SJC gold bars through Facebook using an account called “Yen Nhi.” After Ms. S. transferred over 372 million VND to the account as agreed, she was no longer able to access this Facebook account.

As soon as the report was received, the Huong Tra District Police immediately organized a check and investigation and identified the suspect as Nguyen Ngoc Hau (born in 1996, currently residing in Phong Thai District).

At around 4:00 p.m. the same day, police located Hau in the Phu Bai district and took him to the station for questioning. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to using the Facebook account “Yen Nhi” to participate in online gold trading groups, including the “Community for Exchange and Buying/Selling 9999 Gold” group. There he asked sellers about gold prices. After receiving this information, Hau ran advertisements selling gold short to gain trust and commit fraud. Once buyers transferred funds through an intermediary account, the suspect embezzled the funds and blocked all accounts used for the transactions.

Following this incident, the Hue Police Department advises its citizens to be more vigilant when transacting and buying/selling real estate on social media. In particular, she recommends being careful with unclear relationships and carrying out transactions only after carefully checking all information in order not to be exploited or defrauded by unscrupulous people.
