Drone Restrictions Tighten Over New Jersey Infrastructure
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented sweeping drone flight restrictions over critical infrastructure sites in New Jersey, citing security concerns.
These restrictions, announced on Thursday, are aimed at limiting drone activity within 400 feet of altitude above power stations and other vital facilities. Notably, the restrictions apply solely to drones, excluding civilian airplanes and helicopters.
Expanded Restrictions Follow Recent Sightings
The FAA’s move comes amidst a surge in alleged drone sightings across the Northeast, sparking public concern. While officials have repeatedly emphasized that there is no immediate threat to safety or national security, the increasing frequency of sightings has prompted precautionary measures.
"At the request of federal security partners, the FAA published 22 Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) prohibiting drone flights over critical New Jersey infrastructure," stated the agency.
Key Infrastructure Sites Affected
Among the power stations now under drone flight restrictions are:
- Cedar Grove Switching Station
- Athenia Switching Station
- Hudson Switching Station
- PSE&G Kearny Switching Station
- Bayonne Switching Station
These restrictions, the largest implemented since the drone sightings began a month ago, are scheduled to remain in effect until January 17.
Coordination with Homeland Security
The FAA’s action is part of a coordinated effort involving the Department of Homeland Security.
"In coordination with the FAA and our critical infrastructure partners who requested temporary flight restrictions over their facilities, out of an abundance of caution, the FAA has issued temporary flight restrictions over some critical infrastructure facilities in New Jersey," stated the Department of Homeland Security.
New York Implements Similar Restrictions
Echoing New Jersey’s move, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a temporary drone flight ban over critical infrastructure sites across the state. While specifics regarding the scope and duration of the ban remain unclear, Hochul emphasized the precautionary nature of the decision.
Stay Informed, Stay Safe
As drone activity continues to evolve, it’s crucial to stay informed about regulations and potential restrictions. Always prioritize safety and comply with FAA guidelines.
