Lockheed Martin, the leading fighter manufacturer, has tested an advanced artificial intelligence system capable of independently identifying combat targets, in a move that would redefine air combat.

This development comes within the Overwatch project, which is the first system to integrate tactical artificial intelligence directly into the pilot display of the fifth generation F-35 Lightning II fighter.

According to the slashgear website, the F-35 is one of the most advanced fighters in the world, and serves the US Air Force and its allies. Over the years, Lockheed has continued to develop the aircraft by incorporating advanced systems that make it faster, more stealthy, and more combat capable. With the introduction of new artificial intelligence, the aircraft is now able to identify hostile targets with accuracy beyond the ability of humans, which reduces decision-making time and improves the protection of pilots during combat operations.

The new system is similar to what we see in modern video games, where the enemy appears as an icon on the map, but the military reality is more complex. Artificial intelligence analyzes radar data and communication systems to determine the devices sending signals, whether friendly or hostile, and provides the pilot with accurate information to help him make quick and decisive decisions.

During tests at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, Lockheed explained that its AI model “resolved identification ambiguities between transmitters, improving situational awareness and reducing pilot decision time.”

Transmitters here refer to equipment that broadcasts radio signals, such as radar and communications systems.

After discovering new devices, engineers on the ground use an automated tool to tag them and retrain the AI ​​model in just minutes, updating the database and sending the information back to the aircraft in a single planning cycle.

This practical model, although in the experimental phase, demonstrates the system’s ability to improve over time, and is expected to result in enhanced pilot response speed and target identification accuracy when deployed on combat aircraft.

The application of artificial intelligence in the military field is an accelerating trend, especially in the United States, as the ability to distinguish complex targets faster than humans has become a priority for the Ministry of Defense, and places Lockheed at the forefront of companies capable of equipping fifth-generation fighters with systems similar to future sixth-generation capabilities.

As the Overwatch project continues to be developed, it seems that the F-35 fighters will become more intelligent and rely on artificial intelligence systems, which will enhance the odds of successful combat missions and ensure air superiority in future conflicts in an unprecedented way.
