Plumaria Mosaic exhibition Opens in Morelia, Celebrating Ancient Art Form
A new exhibition showcasing the intricate art of plumaria mosaic, “A window to the Past,” is set to open in Morelia, Michoacán, offering a glimpse into a rich cultural heritage.
Honoring tradition: María Eugenia Negrete Estrada’s Plumaria Mosaics
The Ministry of Culture of Michoacán (Secum) proudly presents “A Window to the Past,” an exhibition dedicated to the exquisite plumaria mosaic artistry of María Eugenia Negrete Estrada.The exhibition will commence on Thursday, April 11th, at 5:00 PM at the Casa Natal Museum in Morelos. Admission is free,inviting all to experience this unique art form.
From Pacho to National Recognition: A Journey in Plumaria
Hailing from Pacho, Negrete’s artistic journey began at the Quetzal Group workshop, an initiative supported by the Michoacan University of san Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH). She studied under the tutelage of yolanda Sereno Ayala, a distinguished artist and recipient of the prestigious Eréndira Arts State Prize in 2023. This foundation has allowed Negrete to master the complex techniques of plumaria mosaic.
Preserving History Through Feathers: The Art of Plumaria Mosaic
Since embarking on her artistic path, Negrete has meticulously recreated 34 works by renowned painters using the plumaria mosaic technique. This ancient art form, which utilizes feathers to create stunning visual representations, has garnered her critically important acclaim. negrete’s talent has been recognized wiht the National Popular Art Prize, numerous state-level awards, and several special national distinctions, solidifying her position as a leading figure in contemporary plumaria art.
Plumaria mosaic, a pre-Hispanic art form, was highly valued in ancient Mesoamerica. Feathers, often from exotic birds, were meticulously arranged to create vibrant and detailed images. Today, artists like Negrete are working to keep this tradition alive.
