In a landmark move, Apple is now allowing iPhone users to designate WhatsApp as their default application for both messaging and calls.This change,a direct consequence of increasing regulatory pressure from the European Union,marks a critically important departure from Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem.

How to Set WhatsApp as Your Default App

The process for setting WhatsApp as the default app is relatively straightforward. Users can navigate to the “Apps” section within their iPhone’s settings and select “Standard apps.” From there, WhatsApp can be chosen as the preferred application for both messages and calls.

This functionality is integrated into the latest WhatsApp version (25.8.74) and is supported by iOS 18.2 and later versions.

Limitations and Considerations

While this change offers greater flexibility,it’s important to note certain limitations. When using WhatsApp as the default calling app, calls will only be routed through WhatsApp for contacts who also use the platform. Calls to landlines or individuals without WhatsApp will still require using the native phone app. Furthermore, Apple’s Siri assistant currently does not fully integrate with this new setting, continuing to utilize Apple’s own services for voice commands.

These limitations suggest a phased integration of the new functionality, with further improvements likely in future iOS updates.

Expanding Choices: Beyond Messaging and Calls

Apple’s move extends beyond just messaging and telephony. Users can already select default apps for browsers, email clients, and password managers. With the release of iOS 18.4, navigation and translation apps are expected to be added to the list of customizable default categories, although this expansion may initially be limited to EU countries.
