First Look: “Elio” Promises an Emotional and Visually stunning Adventure
Early footage suggests Pixar’s latest film will resonate with audiences of all ages.
For those who grew up cherishing early animated films, it’s exciting to see a new generation of original movies emerging from top studios. While one studio’s biggest commercial success in recent years was definitely Inside Out 2,they’ve also stayed true to their roots by introducing new characters and storylines through films like Elemental,Turning Red,luca,and the upcoming release of Elio. After viewing a preview of Elio, there’s reason to believe it will be another excellent feature for the entire family.
Earlier this month,journalists were invited to the studio’s campus in Emeryville,California,to preview twenty-five minutes of the feature and learn more about the film’s creation directly from the filmmakers. Now, the experience of seeing some of the film can finally be shared!
The Emotional Opening Sequence
the preview consisted of four separate sections totaling 25 minutes. The opening of elio introduces the main character, an 11-year-old boy of the same name who has recently lost both his parents. He is seen sitting under a table at a museum dining area. His Aunt Olga, voiced by Zoe Saldaña, asks him about his lunch preferences, but he remains withdrawn. Elio wanders into a space exhibit where a projection show captivates him.
This sequence, featuring limited dialog and focusing on the beauty of space, instantly draws viewers into Elio and its emotional core. While many characters are orphans, this film explores how escapism can be part of the grieving process. It evokes the feeling that, “Yeah… as usual one studio is going to emotionally wreck me.”
First Contact and the Communiverse
The next segment shows Elio’s first contact with aliens. inspired by his museum experience, Elio becomes fascinated with space and seeks to be abducted. According to co-director Madeline Sharafian, Elio is an alien fanatic who has watched classics like E.T. and Close Encounters multiple times.
Instead of being abducted by a single species, Elio arrives at the Communiverse, a visually stunning surroundings where leaders from across the universe gather to exchange ideas. They seek interesting minds and mistakenly believe Elio is the leader of Earth.
