Scientists have developed a novel device to monitor mental workload: an electronic tattoo that adheres to the forehead.According to a report in The Guardian, researchers believe this “e-tattoo” could be invaluable for professionals such as pilots and healthcare workers, where managing cognitive strain is critical.

“For this kind of high-demand and high-stake scenario, eventually we hope to have this real-time mental workload decoder that can give people some warning and alert so that they can self-adjust, or they can ask AI or a co-worker to offload some of their work,” saeid Dr. Nanshu Lu, an author of the research from the University of Texas at Austin. DR. LU added that the device could help workers avoid mistakes and safeguard their well-being.

In a paper published in the journal Device, DR. LU and her team explained that conventional methods of assessing mental workload, such as questionnaires, are often subjective and administered after the task. Existing electroencephalography (EEG) and electrooculography (EOG) devices are cumbersome and susceptible to inaccuracies due to movement. The “e-tattoo,” though, offers a lightweight, flexible, and wireless alternative.

The e-tattoo features a graphite-based conductive path applied to the forehead with adhesive film. Four EEG electrodes detect brain activity, while EOG electrodes track eye movements. These stretchable electrodes are coated with a conductive material. The disposable e-tattoo connects to a reusable circuit via conductive tape, powered by a small battery. The device is projected to cost under $200 and will include an app to alert users of excessive mental strain.

Benefits of Real-Time Mental Workload Monitoring

The potential applications of real-time mental workload monitoring extend beyond preventing errors in high-pressure jobs. The technology could also be used to optimize training programs, improve human-machine interfaces, and even personalize learning experiences.

How the E-Tattoo Works

The e-tattoo utilizes a combination of EEG and EOG sensors to capture brain activity and eye movements, both of which are indicators of mental workload. the data is then processed using algorithms to provide a real-time assessment of the user’s cognitive state.
