Donald Trump’s Gaza Plan: Ethnic Cleansing and International Law Violation

UN Expert Condemns Trump’s Gaza Plan as Ethnic Cleansing

Donald Trump’s proposal to forcibly displace Gazans so the United States can “own” the Gaza Strip is considered a severe violation of international law, according to a United Nations expert. The proposal could amount to ethnic cleansing, a term used for the systematic displacement of a group of people from their homeland based on their ethnicity or nationality.

Trump’s Controversial Gaza Proposal

During a press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump announced the U.S. would take control of Gaza, describing it as a “real estate transaction.” His plan involves moving nearly 2 million Palestinians out of Gaza into neighboring countries, such as Jordan and Egypt, to transform the area into a luxury destination he dubbed “the Riviera of the Middle East.”

Trump’s intentions are clear: to “clean out that whole thing” and establish U.S. control over the Gaza Strip. However, such actions are fraught with legal and moral implications.

A United Nations Denunciation

Navi Pillay, chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, explicitly warns that Trump’s proposal amounts to ethnic cleansing. Pillay, a seasoned UN investigator, emphasizes that forcible displacement of occupied groups is an international crime.

“Trump is woefully ignorant of international law and the law of occupation. Forcible displacement of an occupied group is an international crime, and amounts to ethnic cleansing,” Pillay told Politico.

Human Rights Watch concurs, describing Trump’s proposal as ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law. The organization notes that Trump’s actions, if carried out, would elevate the U.S. from being complicit in war crimes to direct perpetration of atrocities.

Netanyahu’s Support

Despite opposition from numerous international bodies, Netanyahu supports Trump’s proposal. Netanyahu, who has overseen a prolonged military operation in Gaza following Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel, endorsed Trump’s suggestion. However, Pillay asserts that international law applies equally to all states.

Previous UN Reports

Recent UN reports accuse Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza. Pillay and a team of UN Human Rights Council-appointed experts released a report concluding that Israel has intentionally damaged Gaza’s healthcare system, attacked medical personnel and facilities, and inflicted suffering on children.

Children have borne the brunt of these attacks, suffering both directly and indirectly due to the collapse of healthcare services. Israel’s actions have resulted in the deaths of over 46,600 Palestinians, with estimates suggesting up to 64,260 fatalities from traumatic injuries between October 2023 and June 2024.

Trump’s Actions and U.S. Support

Since becoming president, Trump has taken several actions that support Israel. He lifted restrictions imposed by the Biden administration on selling highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, which were previously withheld due to their use in densely populated areas of Gaza.

In a recent move, Trump defied Congress by approving an $8 billion weapons sale to Israel, a decision that had been under review by congressional committees. Trump’s actions suggest a circumvention of the congressional approval process, with overcoming such a challenge highly unlikely given Republicans’ control of both the House and Senate.

Call for Justice

Pillay has called for the International Criminal Court to charge Israel with apartheid. She argues that apartheid is one of the manifestations of Israel’s control over Palestinian territories. This call to action comes as the world grapples with the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As tensions continue to rise and humanitarian crises deepen, the international community watches with unease. The actions of both Trump and Netanyahu raise critical questions about the future of Gaza and the broader consequences of their policies.
