HIV is a virus that affects the immune system. Without treatment, your body becomes increasingly vulnerable to diseases. AIDS is the advanced phase of an HIV infection. ‘Ordinary’ infections are life threatening with AIDS.

The HIV virus can be transferred, for example through unprotected sex, blood-blood contact or from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery or breastfeeding.
