“Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!” is scheduled to close in early 2026. Disney announced Thursday that this closure will allow construction to commence on an “Avatar”-themed land situated in the Hollywood Backlot area of Disneyland California Resort.
While the “Avatar”-themed attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida is based on the original “Avatar” movie, the forthcoming Anaheim experience will be centered around the Pandora seen in “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
The “Avatar” destination was initially revealed at a fan convention last summer, with Imagineers describing it as “dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale.”
Specific details regarding the attraction’s features and construction timeline are currently under wraps.
Concept imagery released on the Disney Parks Blog depicts visitors aboard a boat journeying through a bioluminescent lagoon. The imagery also teases an encounter with a massive,whale-like creature known as a Tulkun leaping from the water,suggesting a possible water-based ride.
The closure of the “Monsters, Inc.” ride, which first opened in 2006, will mark the end of an era for fans of the Pixar classic. The ride offered a family-pleasant adventure through the streets of Monstropolis, recreating scenes from the 2001 film as guests joined Mike and Sulley in their mission to rescue Boo.
In addition to the “Avatar” experience, the resort is developing a new “Coco”-themed attraction, two new “Avengers” attractions, and a parking structure.

The new parking structure, set to be built on the east side of Disneyland Resort, will offer approximately 6,000 parking spaces, along with shuttle and rideshare areas. Additionally, a pedestrian bridge will be constructed to connect Harbor Boulevard to the transportation hub.
