A mixed strategy of reference posts and Family Health Strategy units will be used to administer the vaccine. The initial phase focuses on 10-year-olds, with plans to expand to other age groups as more doses become available.

Starting this Monday, June 9, 2025, a dengue vaccination campaign will be rolled out in Campos, targeting 10-year-old children. The Municipal Health Secretariat, through the Undersecretary of Health Surveillance, is implementing a combined approach using both reference posts and Family Health Strategy (FHS) units equipped with vaccination rooms. The campaign will progressively include older children up to 14 years of age, contingent on vaccine availability and community participation.
According to Undersecretary of Health Surveillance,Charbell Kury,”We quantify all children in the age group that we will start vaccination so we can offer the vaccine in their territory.” He also noted the initial allocation of 6,000 doses, which led to prioritizing the 10-year-old demographic.
Dengue Vaccine Effectiveness and Safety
The dengue vaccine is considered a safe and effective method for protection against all four dengue serotypes, substantially reducing the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and mortality. Clinical trials have demonstrated an effectiveness of 90% in preventing hospitalization and 80% in preventing dengue infection. To receive the vaccine, individuals should visit the nearest vaccination unit with a photo ID, CPF or SUS card, and their vaccination record. The vaccine is administered in two doses, spaced 90 days apart.
Effectiveness reaches 90% for hospitalization and 80% so as not to take dengue.
“Vaccination for dengue is one of the strategies we were waiting for a long time for Campos,” officials stated. They acknowledged the challenges faced during the 2024 epidemic and emphasized the importance of vaccination as a preventative measure.
Preventative Measures and Contraindications
Despite the introduction of the vaccine, the Undersecretary emphasizes that controlling the Aedes Aegypti mosquito population remains crucial. Eliminating breeding grounds is essential, as this mosquito also transmits Zika, Chikungunya, and urban yellow fever.
Individuals who have recently been diagnosed with dengue or are currently experiencing symptoms should postpone vaccination. Specifically, those with a positive diagnosis or recent dengue infection should wait six months before getting vaccinated. Those who contract dengue after the first dose of the vaccine should wait 30 days from the onset of symptoms before receiving the second dose, according to Leonardo Cordeiro, technical advisor of immunization of the Health Department.
The vaccine is not recommended for individuals with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, including those undergoing immunosuppressive therapies.
