Art Exhibition to Explore the Allure and Illusion of a Modern “Golden Age”
Table of Contents
The concept of a “Golden Age” has resonated throughout history, even shaping the tumultuous 20th century. This cultural aspiration, however, often clashed with the harsh realities of wars, environmental destruction, and human suffering. Even the poet Ovid sought refuge from such horrors in verse, yearning for an era of peace and harmony.
Similarly, Vergil’s In Bucolikas (Eclogy 4) offered hope to Romans scarred by civil war, promising a new Golden Age with the return of the Virgin. Yet, this too remained a promise, a fantasy born from despair.
The 21st century has ushered in its own version of a potential Golden Age, fueled by digital immortality and global communication. The promise of boundless entertainment and exploration exists alongside the shadows of digital control, data theft, and the proliferation of counterfeit information.
Today’s global society faces numerous challenges, including natural disasters, social crises, identity conflicts, and widespread insecurity. Many seek refuge from these issues, but in an interconnected world, finding true escape is increasingly challenging. Traditional sanctuaries seem to be disappearing, replaced by development and commercialization.
In this context, the question arises: Can a true “Golden Age” still exist? Is it possible to maintain faith in a better society amidst hatred and violence? Or is the pursuit of such an ideal merely another form of deception, a “deep fake” that masks a deeper illusion? Perhaps the answer lies not in waiting, but in actively building a better future. But are we willing and able to do so?
Exhibition Seeks Artistic Interpretations
An upcoming exhibition aims to foster artistic discussion about the future of Latvian and global society. It seeks to explore the reflections, visions, and critiques of Latvian artists on the central theme:
The Golden Age: Opportunity or Future Fake?
The 21st century has ushered in its own version of a potential Golden Age, fueled by digital immortality and global communication.
This theme is open to diverse interpretations, inviting artists to consider:
- How was the Golden Age in the Cultural and Arts Past?
- What is today and how can you escape today?
- Where to flee? What the gold looks like refuge?
- Gold fake brilliance and misery – why do we need a counterfeit?
- Golden age probe – Cultural Fatigue and Future.
Professional artists are invited to submit original works for a collective competition exhibition that addresses the core questions posed by the exhibition.
