Greenland and Denmark request meeting with US Secretary of State
Greenland and Denmark have asked to meet quickly with the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to discuss Donald Trump‘s recent statements on his desire to annex the Arctic island, the Greenlandic Minister of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.
“The objective of the meeting is to discuss the significant statements of the United States regarding Greenland”wrote Vivian Motzfeldt on Facebook. “It has so far not been possible for US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to meet with the Greenland government; and this despite the fact that the government of Greenland and the Danish government have, throughout 2025, requested a meeting at the level of the ministries of foreign affairs”she added.
This announcement comes as a meeting takes place in the Danish Parliament between the Danish government and the parliamentary foreign affairs committee on the relationship between the Kingdom of Denmark – which brings together metropolitan Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland – and the United States.
Earlier in the day, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom had, in a joint statement, supported Denmark in the face of Donald Trump’s claims on Greenland.
The Nordic foreign ministers also stressed, in a joint statement, that matters concerning Denmark and Greenland should be decided exclusively by Denmark and Greenland.
In Paris, where she participated in a summit of Ukraine’s allies, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed this demonstration of solidarity. “This helps, in any case, to remind us that this is not just a conflict with the Kingdom of Denmark (…) but with the whole of Europe”she said on DR television.
