The veterinary office of the Wartburgkreis district office points out that dead pigeons have been found in several urban areas of Eisenach in the past few days. Research confirms the cause is Newcastle disease – a highly contagious viral disease that affects pigeons and many other bird species.
Newcastle disease causes atypical behavioral changes, breathing problems and often death in affected birds. There is no danger to humans or other animals, only birds are affected.
On this occasion, the veterinary office points out that in Germany there is a requirement to vaccinate against Newcastle disease for chickens and turkeys, including those kept as hobby animals. Animal owners must vaccinate their animals and monitor for symptoms. Citizens should avoid contact with dead birds and contact the public order office. Further information can be obtained from the Wartburgkreis Veterinary Office.
