Maxwell to Replace D’Angelo at Roots Picnic 2025

PHILADELPHIA – D’angelo will no longer headline the 2025 Roots Picnic. The declaration came via a statement shared on the festival’s social media pages. According to the statement,the singer is experiencing “an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery [he] had earlier this year,” and has been advised that performing “could further complicate matters” as he recovers.
The Roots Picnic is scheduled to take place on may 31 and June 1 in PHILADELPHIA. Maxwell will be replacing D’Angelo on the bill.
D’Angelo has not performed live as 2022, when he made a surprise appearance at the Netflix Is a Joke festival. Prior to that, he played a show at the Apollo Theater in February 2021. His last album, black Messiah, was released in 2014.
D’Angelo’s statement reads:
It is indeed with the deepest of regrets that @must cancel my performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia next weekend.
But, due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery @had earlier this year, @ve been advised by my team of specialist that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters.
It is nearly unfeasible to express how disappointed @m not to be able to play with my Brothers “The Roots”. and even more disappointed not to see all of You.
