The annual city cycling event, which aims to promote cycling and climate-friendly transportation, kicked off on June 7th. This year’s opening tour culminated in Bargteheide, where 30 teams, comprising over 250 cyclists, have already joined the initiative. Residents are still encouraged to participate and demonstrate their commitment to eco-friendly mobility in the stormarn district.

“This time the route was particularly idyllic, away from busy roads,” reports Bargteheide Mayor Gabriele Hettwer, who participated in the star trip, cycling with the ADFC through Delingsdorf, ahrensburg, Hammoor, and Tremsbüttel before returning to Bargteheide.

Cyclists arrived at the meadow in front of the all-day center at 1 p.m. Despite the rainy weather and the Pentecost weekend resulting in lower turnout than previous years, participants received a warm welcome. Mayor Gabriele Hettwer expressed her gratitude to Isa Reher, climate manager of the Stormarn district, and the ADFC for their organizational efforts. Participants enjoyed refreshments, including drinks, fruit, and cereal bars, and had access to an information stand. Bicycle encoding was also available.

The city uses cycling to identify areas in Bargteheide that need improvement for cyclists. Obstacles and issues can be reported through the Radar reporting platform, the free city cycling app, or the city’s defect detectors.Mayor Hettwer stated, “This low -threshold tool is important to me to be able to react quickly to defects.” Examples of reported defects include dirty or broken bike paths, overgrown vegetation, parked vehicles obstructing paths, waste containers or signs hindering cycling, high curbs, potholes, cracks in the road, poorly visible markings, or visual obstructions.

“All reports are checked regularly and forwarded to those responsible,” assures Natascha Pätzold, the city’s new mobility officer. This initiative supports the foot and cycling concept adopted in July of the previous year, which aims to enhance cycling comfort and safety in Bargteheide. mayor Hettwer added, “With the support of the population, we would like to quickly and unbureaucratically achieve initial improvements in the bicycle infrastructure.”

The city cycling campaign continues until June 27,2025. Individuals and teams can register online or via the city cycling app to log their kilometers and contribute to climate protection.
