Cyberpunk 2 Officially Enters Pre-Production, Ditches “project Orion” Title

The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, previously known as Project Orion, has reached a major milestone and received a new, albeit possibly temporary, name.
CD Projekt has announced that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, formerly codenamed Project Orion, is now officially in pre-production and will be known as Cyberpunk 2. This announcement was part of the studio’s latest development update.
The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel was initially revealed in 2022 under the codename Project Orion. CD Projekt has been providing investors with updates on its progress.In March, the company indicated that Project Orion was nearing the end of its concept phase and would soon enter pre-production. The studio’s Q1 2025 earnings results confirm that pre-production has commenced.
Alongside this development milestone, CD Projekt announced that the sequel will now be referred to as Cyberpunk 2, dropping the Project Orion codename. though, the studio has indicated that this name might not be permanent. CD Projekt told The Verge Cyberpunk 2 “just means it’s another game in the Cyberpunk universe.”
The development team for Cyberpunk 2 has seen a modest increase, with 96 developers now working on the project, compared to 84 in February. The majority of the studio is focused on The Witcher 4, with 422 employees assigned to that project. In comparison, 49 developers are working on the multiplayer The Witcher spin-off Project Sirius, and 19 are on project Hadar, the studio’s frist original game.
These production updates were accompanied by sales milestones. The Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Project Liberty has sold over 10 million copies, while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has surpassed 60 million sales as it approaches its tenth anniversary.
looking ahead, CD Projekt is preparing a Switch 2 version of cyberpunk 2077 for release alongside the console launch next week, with a Mac port also in development. The Witcher 4, featuring Ciri, is still some time away, with Cyberpunk 2, set in a city resembling “Chicago gone wrong,” expected to follow.
