After a surge in COVID-19 cases from mid-April to the end of May 2025, the Ho Chi Minh-Ville Department of Health reports a significant decrease in infections, with only around 32 cases per week currently.
The infectious disease monitoring system in Ho Chi Minh-Ville recorded 69 cases of COVID-19 during week 23 (June 2-8). However, week 24 (June 9-15) saw a 66% reduction, with only 32 cases reported, including 14 hospitalized patients and 18 ambulatory patients.
the decline in cases is viewed as “a positive signal” indicating that Ho Chi Minh-Ville is effectively managing the recent wave of the epidemic.
despite the decrease, the Ho Chi Minh-Ville Department of Health urges the public to maintain vigilance and continue practicing preventative measures, especially for high-risk groups, as “the risk of serious complications and death can always occur.” The city has recorded two recent deaths linked to COVID-19 in patients with underlying chronic diseases.
Health Officials Urge Continued Vigilance
“The risk of serious complications and death can always occur, especially in people belonging to high-risk groups.”
The Department of Ho-Chi-Minh Health advises residents not to panic but to remain informed and adhere to Ministry of Health guidelines for disease prevention and control. This is especially significant given the circulation of the NB.1.8.1 variant, about which limited scientific data exists regarding its virulence and transmission rate.
The Ho Chi Minh-Ville Department of Health has directed medical facilities to enhance monitoring, ensure early detection of COVID-19 cases and emerging variants, and maintain preparedness for patient care and treatment.
The Ho Chi Minh Ville disease control center (HCDC), in collaboration with hospitals and the University of Oxford (oucru), is conducting genetic sequencing of new cases to monitor the spread of the NB.1.8.1 variant and identify any potential new variants.
The Ho Chi Minh City Health Department is also focusing on public education campaigns, targeting high-risk groups such as the elderly, individuals with underlying health conditions, and those who have not received complete vaccinations.
Preventative measures recommended by the department include:
- Wearing masks in public places, public transport, and medical facilities.
- Regular handwashing with soap and water or using hand sanitizer.
- Limiting gatherings in crowded places.
- Increasing physical activity and maintaining a balanced diet.
- monitoring health and seeking medical attention for symptoms like fever, cough, or breathing difficulties.
