The sport of ice hockey traces its roots back to Canada in the early nineteenth century. While the term “hockey” itself comes from the ancient French word “hocquet,” meaning “stick,” the game evolved significantly over time. Initially, a ball was used, but by 1860, it was replaced by a puck. In 1879, students at McGill University formalized the first rules of the game.

The first recognized team, the McGill University Hockey Club, was established in 1880, marking a pivotal moment as ice hockey gained recognition as the national sport of canada. Its popularity quickly spread throughout the country. In 1892,the Governor General of Canada established the Stanley Cup,a prestigious trophy first awarded to the Amateur Athletic Association of Montreal.

during the 1890s, ice hockey’s reach extended south into the United States. The first recorded match in the U.S.took place in 1895 between Johns Hopkins and Yale universities. Soon after, the sport crossed the Atlantic, making its European debut at the Olympic Antwerp Games in 1920.
