I remember: It was around April 2020. I drove my trust to the discounter and was surprised. There was a long snake in front of the entrance. Everyone has a shopping cart in front of them and everyone had a mask. Since there was no car in the box, I stood in line without a car, because for the three parts I wanted to buy, no car was necessary. But the other waiting people quickly instructed me: “Without a car you can’t avoid the security guard there!”

Corona and the toilet paper
So I lined up in the queue of the waiting people who stood in front of the exit to get the car of a “finished customer”. I counted through: I was the 22nd waiting end without a car. Only 15 customers were allowed to go to the store with cars. Spouses were not allowed in a car for two – everyone had to have their own car!

What do you do, except to wait, in such a snake? You can see who comes out of the store. It noticed that everyone had bought a packet toilet paper and other items. At first I thought of a special offer, but after a while people without a toilet paper came out of the shop, instead they had large packs with kitchen rolls in the car. It didn’t take long for me to be comprehensively informed: for a few days now people have been buying toilet paper what it takes. The discounter has introduced a delivery limitation: Each customer could only buy one package – as long as stocks last. And it soon ended.
In economics, one speaks of a substitution good if a good can replace another without great deficiency. So customers quickly discovered the kitchen roles as substitution good for toilet paper. And they were not obese people who chose this alternative. 😉
Interesting information situation
During this discounter visit, I would have spontaneously took a pack of Klopapier with me. But neither the original nor the substitution good were nor. Ok, I still had supplies, but I found the phenomenon interesting. The news about the toilet paper waved through the news. Tips were spread on the Internet, when and where the coveted paper is available again.
At some point I was visiting a neighbor. He would have truly stuffed his guest toilet with a toilet paper! No, not the toilet pot! The whole room! I appreciated the crowd and briefly overturned how long it will come out. It should be enough for two years. What Corona did with people!
For my birthday I symbolically got a cake – completely out of toilet paper rolls. Nine of these roles were very creatively arranged. Someone had given “everything”! The first toilet paper jokes and cartoons circulated on the net. The situation was serious. Alternative “wiping methods” spread. A damp rag would also do it. Toilets with a combined water jet (a similar bidet) are nonplusultra. You learned how other cultures dealt with the problem. Completely new knowledge happened.
It’s such a thing with the hamsters! I remember the fall of 1962 and the cubic crisis. It was a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union in October 1962, which was triggered by the stationing of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. People started hamsters. Ok, flour, salt, oil, sugar, canned food and everything that has been durable was bought what the wallet gave. There was a special feature of the sugar. Back then, Cuba was known as the sugar island. In addition to rum and cigars, the island also exported sugar at the time. However, the cane sugar, which was rarely used in German households.
Germany produced its sugar from beets and had no lack of supplies. Not even if the Cubans turned the sugar tap. However, which the United States still do with its embargo.
Nevertheless, people bought all sugar supplies for weeks.
