Rivian at the Bottom: Surprising Reliability Results from Consumer Reports

The latest annual automaker reliability report from Consumer Reports has shaken up the automotive landscape. While Subaru took the top spot as expected, the real buzz is surrounding Rivian’s dismal performance, landing dead last on the list. This surprising result comes just months after Rivian topped a different Consumer Reports survey for the "most loved" auto brands.

EV Reliability: A Mixed Bag

The report highlights a mixed bag for electric vehicles (EVs). While some, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, scored highly for reliability, others, including Rivian’s R1T and R1S SUVs, as well as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevrolet Blazer EV fell significantly short.

Consumer Reports states that Ford’s F-150 Lightning and GM’s Chevy Blazer EV particularly struggled, experiencing a number of issues that led to low reliability scores.

Interestingly, despite the overall trend of EVs having more problems than traditional vehicles, there are signs of improvement. Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, while not exceptional, performed more in line with the average.

Rivian’s Reliability Downfall

What led to Rivian’s dramatic drop in reliability? The report points to issues with both the SUV and pickup models, suggesting they are either below or well below the average for other automakers.

This stark contrast between Rivian’s perceived desirability ("most loved") and its actual reliability raises questions about the company’s ability to deliver on its promises.

Are EVs Headed Towards Reliability?

While EVs still have some way to go in terms of reliability, the fact that many models are showing improvement is encouraging. As technology advances and manufacturing processes mature, it is likely that EVs will continue to become more reliable in the years to come.
