Constitutional Justice Candidates: 7 Supreme Court Judge Eligibility Tests

Jakarta – The selection process for Candidates for Constitutional Justices from the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia entered an important stage in the form of a suitability test (interview) on Thursday (05/02). This activity is part of the selection mechanism to fill the position of Constitutional Judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia.

A total of nine participants took part in the interview stage, with seven of them coming from the General Court environment. The presence of the majority of career judges from the General Court reflects the strong contribution of the general justice corps in the process of regenerating constitutional judges from the Supreme Court.

The seven participants from the General Court are:

  1. Dr. Arvits, SH, MH – High Judge Sorting Cases at the Junior Criminal Registrar of the Supreme Court Registrar;
  2. Dr. Fahmiron, SH, M. Hum. – High Judge at the Denpasar High Court;
  3. Dr. I Made Sukadana, SH, MH – Main Judge/Judicial High Judge at the Supreme Court Legal and Judicial Policy and Education and Training Strategy Agency;
  4. Dr. Liliek Prisbawono Adi, SH, MH – High Judge at the Medan High Court;
  5. Dr. Marsudin Nainggolan, SH, MH – Chairman of the North Kalimantan High Court;
  6. Dr. Minanoer Rachman, SH, MH – Junior Registrar for Criminal Cases at the Supreme Court Registry;
  7. Dr. Syahlan, SH, MH – Deputy Chairman of the Bandung High Court.

The interview was divided into two panels. The first panel was chaired by His Excellency the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court for Judicial Affairs, Soeharto, while the second panel was chaired by His Excellency the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court for Non-Judicial Affairs, Budi Santiarto.

In the interview session, the participants were tested regarding their integrity, track record, understanding of the constitution, independence, and vision regarding the strategic role of the Constitutional Court as guardian of the constitution (the guardian of the constitution). In-depth study is also directed at annotating constitutional decisions chosen by participants, constitutional argumentation skills, and sensitivity to contemporary constitutional issues.

“Being a constitutional judge does not only require competence in legal science, but also integrity and the ability to self-control,” said Soeharto.

This stage is part of the Supreme Court’s commitment to present Constitutional Judges who not only have adequate academic capacity and judicial experience, but also strong integrity and statesmanship. With a long background in the judicial environment, especially the General Court, candidates are expected to be able to bring a rich perspective of judicial practice in safeguarding the constitutionality of norms.

The selection process will continue in accordance with the internal mechanism of the Supreme Court until the names are determined to be proposed as Constitutional Judges from the Supreme Court elements next Monday (09/03).
