Spain Sends Frigate to Mediterranean: No Iran War Support | Sánchez

Madrid is sending its most modern frigate, the “Cristóbal Colón,” to Cyprus to help secure the EU’s external borders. But the head of government continues to stick to his sharp criticism of the Israeli-American attack on Iran.

After its sharp criticism of the attack on Iran by the USA and Israel, which is controversial under international law, Spain is now increasing its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean – although expressly not to support American-Israeli operations. Madrid is sending its navy’s most modern frigate, the “Cristóbal Colón,” to the EU state of Cyprus to help secure the EU’s external border, according to the Defense Ministry.

“By sending the Cristóbal Colón, Spain shows its commitment to the defense of the European Union and its eastern border,” said the ministry in Madrid. The frigate made its way to the Mediterranean together with the French nuclear aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” from the Baltic Sea, where the ships took part in NATO maneuvers. According to information from Madrid, the ships are expected to reach their destination in the eastern Mediterranean around March 10th.

The deployment is part of a broader European response to recent military tensions in the Middle East. On Sunday night, a British air base in Cyprus was the target of a drone attack attributed to pro-Iranian forces. After the attack, Great Britain had already deployed a warship and Greece had deployed combat aircraft to Cyprus.

The EU island state of Cyprus is the easternmost outpost of the European Union in the Mediterranean and is close to the crisis region in the Middle East. The coast of Syria is only a few hundred kilometers away. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez assured Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides of Spain’s “full solidarity” after the drone incident.

However, the Spanish government is now emphasizing that the use of the frigate off the coast of Cyprus is exclusively of a defensive nature. The “Cristóbal Colón” is primarily intended to provide air defense capabilities. The ship will also be available to support civilian evacuations from the region in an emergency.

For years, Spain has stationed a Patriot anti-aircraft battery in the south of Türkiye, near the Syrian border, as part of NATO. According to Spanish information, this Patriot position was also involved in the defense of the ballistic missile that was recently launched from Iran on its way into Turkish airspace and was shot down.

Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles made it clear that Madrid differentiates between military attacks and defensive protection missions. “One thing is offensive missions and another is defensive missions,” she said. Spain will “always stand at the side of the European Union and defend the fundamental principles of peace”.

Spain’s announcement that it will send a frigate to the Mediterranean comes amid an unusually acrimonious diplomatic row between Madrid and Washington. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took a clear stance against the attack on Iran by the USA and Israel, spoke of a breach of international law and warned of an escalation in the Middle East. In addition, Sánchez had refused to use the American military bases in Morón and Rota, Spain, for military operations against Iran.

US President Donald Trump responded with a tantrum. He announced that he would cut “all trade” with Spain and called the country a “terrible partner.”
