BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – The Chinese government stated that bilateral relations with Russia have the opportunity to break new ground this year.
This statement was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when he met with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in Beijing on Sunday (1/2/2026).
The meeting was the latest round of strategic communication between the two countries, as reported AFP.

In recent years, Beijing and Moscow have steadily increased economic cooperation and diplomatic contacts.
This strategic partnership has become increasingly close since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
During the meeting in the Chinese capital, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of collaboration between China and Russia to face global uncertainty.
Wang told Shoigu that the two countries must work together to uphold multilateralism in times full of turmoil.

In addition, he also encouraged both parties to advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world.
“China is willing to work with Russia to deepen strategic coordination, and push China-Russia relations to break new ground in the new year,” said Wang Yi.
This high-level meeting in Beijing took place amid claims by the United States (US) that an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine was getting closer.
At the same time, Russia’s top economic envoy also reportedly held impromptu talks about the war with US officials in Florida this week.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, China continues to position itself as a neutral party.
Beijing insists it does not send lethal weapons aid to any party, in contrast to steps taken by the US and other Western countries.
Nevertheless, China remains a key political and economic ally for Russia.
This position sparked criticism from NATO members who labeled Beijing as the main driver in the war, especially because China has until now never provided an official condemnation of Russia’s actions.
