In a move signaling a potential realignment of global economic partnerships, leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and china are meeting in kuala Lumpur for a trilateral summit. This gathering, the first of its kind to include China, underscores a growing trend among these regions to diversify their economic and strategic alliances in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape.

The summit follows the bi-annual ASEAN summit, where malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed he has reached out to U.S. President Donald trump to discuss concerns over tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Southeast Asian economies. These tariffs, dubbed ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, have prompted ASEAN nations to seek collective dialog with Washington.

Malaysia, currently holding the rotating chair of ASEAN, aims to strengthen ties between ASEAN and the GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia and the United Arab emirates.
