[세이브더칠드런 제공]

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Sang-seo = Save the Children, an international non-governmental organization (NGO) for children’s rights, announced on the 20th that it held the ‘Environment, Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance Improvement (ESG) Children’s Rights Indicator Discussion in Response to Climate Crisis’ to reflect the perspective of children’s rights in companies’ climate crisis response strategies.

The roundtable discussion hosted by Save the Children Assemble, a children and youth participation group that raises awareness of children’s rights issues caused by the climate crisis, was prepared to bring together ESG experts to discuss ways to reflect children as major stakeholders in the process of establishing companies’ climate crisis response strategies and how to apply this to ESG reports.

According to Save the Children Assemble’s analysis of the ESG reports of the top 100 companies in Korea’s market capitalization, there was not a single case in which children were considered in the company’s climate and environmental strategies.

Of the 97 companies that disclosed ESG reports, the majority covered children only in a limited way.

Koo Jeong-woo, a professor of sociology at Sungkyunkwan University who participated in the discussion, said, “It is important to fully explain the logical justification for whether children should be considered important stakeholders in responding to the climate crisis.”

Hye-young Yoo, head of Save the Children’s Children’s Rights Project Team, said, “We expect to be able to present a new standard that considers children’s rights in responding to the climate crisis and discussing sustainable management.”
