Initial reports suggest that a BMW veered into oncoming traffic, colliding first with a Toyota, which was forced over the guardrail, then with a Ford Fiesta, before finally hitting a concrete wall approximately 80 meters away. The incident took place on a straight stretch of the 656 state road, close to the Angelini stadium. Local police from Chieti, a helicopter rescue team, two 118 ambulances, and firefighters were dispatched to the site to extricate the victims from the wreckage.

The force of the impact proved fatal for the three occupants of the Toyota: Sergio Liberatoscioli, the driver, and sisters Bianca and Maria, all residents of Guardiagrele. Thomas Bojano, 27, from Lettomanoppello, the driver of the BMW, was transported to the Emergency department of Pescara but died shortly after arrival. The occupants of the Ford Fiesta, a young man and woman, escaped without injury. Authorities have seized the three vehicles and Bojano‘s phone as part of their investigation.
